How
To
Correctly Implement Subdomains
It is so much more important to learn how to correctly implement
subdomains than just learn how to add a subdomain. The
results of
those procedures are as different as daylight and darkness.
The
darkness is just adding a subdomain and the daylight is the correct
implementation of subdomains so they are benefical to your business.
So let's learn exactly how to properly implement a subdomain so you can
enjoy its powerful benefits such as keeping the extra cash in your
pocket where it belongs instead of buying a new domain name for each
niche of your business...
First of all, log into your cPanel using your userid and password:.
Then click on the Subdomain

icon.
The following panel is displayed:
Sub
Domain Maintenance
Current
Sub-Domains
The following screen will then be displayed:

Sub Domain Maintenance

|
SubDomain
Creation
Bind reloading on viral using rndc zone: [wayneowens.com] The subdomain, traffic-exchanges.wayneowens.com has been added.
|
Now click on "Go Back" at the bottom of the partial screen display
shown above.
Notice on
the following screen how the subdomain we just created
(traffic-exchanges.wayneowens.com) is shown under Current Domains.
Notice you can add another subdomain, Setup Redirection,
Remove
Redirection or Delete traffic-exchanges.wayneowens.com:

Sub-Domains
traffic-exchanges.wayneowens.com
( public_html/traffic-exchanges)
- Note
the
location where files are
stored for traffic-exchanges.wayneowens.com (in red within parens
after
Sub-Domain name above) - go to "File Manager" on cPanel main menu;
click on the folder image just to left of "public_html". In
the display of folders and files, you will see the folder
"traffic-exchanges"; click on the folder image just to the left of
"traffic-exchanges" and you are at the place any documents you create
for "traffic-exchanges.wayneowens.com" are stored.
- Be
sure to
create an index.html page in
the "traffic-exchanges" folder or everyone will be able to see every
file you have in that folder just by typing the subdomain name URL in
their browser:
http://www.traffic-exchanges.wayneowens.com
or
http://www.wayneowens.com/traffic-exchanges
NOTE: I have already created index.html -
so that
is the page you will see - pay attention to how it tells user what the
page is used for and has a option to redirect them back to our main
site.
Note:
Subdomains rely on the DNS system in order to function, which means
that your DNS information must propagate throughout the different DNS
servers on the Internet before your subdomain becomes fully active.
This process on the average takes a few hours.

- Fill in
value starting
with "http://" as
shown above
(ex: http://www.wayneowens.com/traffic-exchanges) which would point to
the folder created on the "Add Subdomain" panel shown earlier.
Once you click on "File Manager" from your main cpanel and then click
on the folder to the left of "public_html", you will see a folder
called traffic-exchanges.
NOTE:
Pay particular
attention to the
"Note" just
underneath the "Save" button in the previous example. It is
wanting to make sure you understand ho
w
to reference the filename.
The following should help make this a bit easier to
understand:
Example:
- You created
a redirect for
"http://traffic-exchanges.wayneowens.com/test.html" to
"http://wayneowens.com/traffic/test.html".
- To actually
have that
page show up correctly in
your browser, you would have to enter the URL as:
http://wayneowens.com/traffic/test.html/
(note the
ending
"/" - that is what makes the difference!)
Don't forget it or you will
get a HTML 404 error - page not found.
